Expat Life

“But today, in the world of freedom, the proudest boast is “Ich bin ein Berliner”.

Granted, I’m a fairly fresh-off-the-boat Berliner. I’ve lived in Germany since 2016, first in the beautiful port city of Hamburg, and now in the German Haupstadt. I also lived in Thailand for 11 months, teaching English in a fishing village outside of Bangkok, and studied abroad in the tiny Dutch town of Well (living in a medieval castle, no less).

Expat life isn’t all fun and games, though; I cite the time in Thailand as some of the hardest months of my life. Living abroad is a huge opportunity, but it’s also a huge challenge (check out my posts on culture shock and being a faraway friend here). But as hard as it is—as much as I miss my friends, my family, my City by the Bay—there’s little I’d change. And that little would be…more sunshine. Bitte.
