Before we jump into this list of Berlin Christmas markets, I’m going to start by making the bold statement that anyone who doesn’t love Christmas markets must be the Grinch himself. Even if you don’t celebrate Christmas, or if carols make you cringe, or if you think gift-giving is consumerism at its worst—you’re going to love a Christmas market. Why? I mean, what’s not to love? There’s hot wine, delicious food, cozy booths that give even the most utilitarian city a bit of charm. It softens the harsh blow of the early European winter, and gives you a reason for being outside, enjoying the fresh air without freezing your bum off.
Although Germans (unapologetically) love Christmas, Berlin is not especially known for its Christmas markets—which is actually a positive thing. I’ve found there’s more variety, more nontraditional options, and more inclusivity than in some of the other German cities I’ve visited.
Whether you’re looking for a traditional German stollen, a glass of absinthe, or a crazy sex toy, this list has a Berlin Christmas market for you.
The Ultimate List of Every Berlin Christmas Market
Most of the markets are open every day, with exceptions for Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve. The link points you to a page with the full details, but I’ve indicated where certain markets are especially limited.
*The Christmas market at Schloss Charlottenburg is one of my favorites. The palace provides a beautiful backdrop, and there’s a wide selection of food beyond the “normal” Christmas market fare.
Kreuzboerg Christmas Market – limited run
Berlin Sweets Market – Christmas Edition – limited run
*While the Gendarmenmarkt Christmas market is among the most touristy (and most crowded), it has one of the biggest selection of crafts, jewelry, and gifts. It also requires a ticket to enter.
*If you’re visiting Mitte, it’s easy to do a bit of a Christmas market crawl and hit up Alexanderplatz, “Winter Dream at Alexa” and the Christmas market at the Berlin Town Hall. Alexanderplatz and the Berlin Town Hall both icerinks, if you enjoy skating!
Christmas Market in Alt-Rixdorf in Neukölln– limited run
*Though I’ve missed it every year, the Christmas market in Alt-Rixdorf is rumored to be a magical experience. If you can visit during its limited run—do it!
*Kulturbrauerei has a beautiful Christmas market, with lots of lights and projections. It’s small enough to feel cozy, but big enough that you don’t feel crammed. It is, however, very popular, especially with locals—so try to go later in the evening and/or during the week.
